Princeton Review Releases 2026 Best Colleges Rankings, Emphasizing Student Experience

The Princeton Review has unveiled its 2026 Best Colleges rankings, a comprehensive guide that profiles 391 of the nation's top undergraduate institutions based on student feedback. This year's rankings, derived from surveys of 170,000 students, cover 50 diverse categories, from academic excellence to campus life, providing prospective students with valuable insights into where they might find their best-fit college.

Among the highlights, Sarah Lawrence College in New York tops the list for Professors Get High Marks, while Washington and Lee University in Virginia is recognized for both Best Classroom Experience and Great Financial Aid. The University of Massachusetts—Amherst leads in Best Campus Food, and Washington University in St. Louis is celebrated for Best College Dorms. Notably, a new category, Most Politically Moderate Students, has been introduced this year, with the University of Richmond taking the top spot, reflecting the growing interest in political diversity on campus.

The rankings also shed light on financial aspects, with Williams College offering the Highest Average Need-Based Scholarships at $74,113, and the University of South Florida presenting the Lowest Public School In-state Tuition & Fees at $6,368. For students concerned about diversity, the City University of New York: Brooklyn College is noted for having the Most Diverse Student Body.

Rob Franek, Editor-in-Chief of The Princeton Review, emphasizes the importance of student opinions in shaping the rankings. The Princeton Review does not rank colleges based on its own opinions but rather on the experiences and satisfaction of students attending these institutions. This approach aims to assist applicants in navigating the complex decision of selecting the right college for their academic and personal growth.

The 2026 edition of The Best 391 Colleges also features special sections like Statistical Stand-Out Schools, highlighting institutions with unique distinctions, and Great Schools for 22 of the Most Popular Undergraduate Majors, including a new addition for Artificial Intelligence majors. These resources, along with the rankings, are designed to support students and families in making informed decisions about higher education.
