CPV Breaks Ground on 114 MW Wind Project on Former Pennsylvania Coal Mine Lands

Competitive Power Ventures' affiliate, CPV Renewable Power, has announced the start of construction for CPV Rogue's Wind, a 114 MW wind project spanning Cambria and Clearfield Counties in Pennsylvania. This project represents a significant step in the company's efforts to repurpose former coal mine lands for renewable energy production, marking CPV's third such initiative. The CPV Rogue's Wind project will join two other CPV operations in Cambria County: CPV Maple Hill Solar and the CPV Fairview Energy Center, showcasing CPV's commitment to a multi-faceted approach to energy generation aligned with the company's vision for a reliable, low-carbon electric supply.

Gary Lambert, CEO of CPV, emphasized the company's successful track record in Pennsylvania, stating that the addition of CPV Rogue's Wind will demonstrate all three types of generation in CPV's operating portfolio. The project is particularly noteworthy for its focus on brownfield development and community impact. Sean Finnerty, President of CPV Renewables, highlighted the company's commitment to revitalizing former coal mine lands and bringing vital resources to areas in need. This approach not only contributes to clean energy production but also plays an active role in regional development alongside community partners.

CPV Rogue's Wind is the first project tied to CPV's recent partnership announcement with Harrison Street, a leading investment management firm. This partnership, which saw Harrison Street acquire one-third of CPV Renewables, is expected to accelerate the build-out of CPV's 4 GW renewable development pipeline. The wind farm will consist of 19 Vestas V-162 wind turbines and is projected to provide enough electricity to support approximately 32,000 households. The environmental impact is significant, with annual CO2 emissions reduction equivalent to removing about 28,400 cars from the road.

Beyond its environmental benefits, CPV Rogue's Wind is set to have a substantial economic and educational impact on the local community. The project will generate new revenue for local municipalities and create hundreds of jobs during the construction phase. Additionally, it will serve as an educational experience for visitors to the nearby Rock Run Recreation Area, where outdoor enthusiasts can explore trails leading to the base of the project's turbines. Tom Kakabar, Chair of the Cambria County Conservation and Recreation Authority, expressed enthusiasm for the project, stating that after more than 15 years of hope, the authority is finally converting a long-standing dream to a reality.

CPV Rogue's Wind is expected to reach commercial operation in 2026 and is part of CPV's larger 10 GW pipeline of renewable and dispatchable generation projects. This pipeline includes utility-scale power generation with carbon capture, demonstrating CPV's commitment to helping the U.S. meet its decarbonization goals. As the energy landscape continues to evolve, projects like CPV Rogue's Wind represent a crucial step towards a more sustainable future by repurposing former industrial sites and investing in renewable energy that brings new life and opportunities to communities previously dependent on fossil fuel industries.
